How do I check an installer is CEC-accredited?
Ask for their accreditation number and look it up on the Clean Energy Council / Solar Accreditation Australia register. The accredited person should be the one on your roof, not just a name on the paperwork with unaccredited labour doing the work.
What warranty should I expect?
As a benchmark: panels around 10-15 years product and 25 years performance, inverter 5-10 years, battery around 10 years, and a workmanship warranty of at least 5 years. Get every one of these in writing before you pay.
Should I pay a deposit?
A small deposit is normal, but never pay the full amount before the equipment is installed and switched on. Be wary of anyone demanding cash or full payment upfront.
Do I need council approval?
Standard rooftop solar usually doesn't need council approval, but heritage-listed homes, some double-storey installs, and certain body-corporate properties can. A good installer will flag it and handle it.
What's the difference between the STC discount and a feed-in tariff?
The STC discount is a one-off amount taken off the purchase price upfront. A feed-in tariff is an ongoing credit from your electricity retailer for the power you export to the grid. They're separate and you get both.
Can I add a battery later?
Yes, but it's cheaper and cleaner if the inverter is hybrid or battery-ready from day one. If you're likely to add storage or an EV charger later, tell the installer now so they size the system and switchboard for it.
