Month by month install planner

The best time to install solar in Bendigo is March-May, but batteries can make sense any month

March to May is the cleanest Bendigo window for solar: cooler roofs, fewer storm delays and enough time before winter bills and summer cooling. June to August is still fine if you accept lower immediate output. If you want solar running before December, start quoting by August or September.

Bendigo solar and battery planner, month by month

MonthLocal conditionsGood or bad for the workWhat to book now
JanuaryHot roofs, high air conditioning use, holiday scheduling gaps.Good for seeing summer bill pain, harder for roof work on extreme heat days.Quote solar sizing from actual summer usage. Book February or March install.
FebruaryStill hot, occasional storms, strong solar production.Good for urgent high bill fixes, but roof safety can move dates.Confirm system size, Powercor pre-approval and equipment before autumn.
MarchMilder roof temperatures and good daylight.Excellent for solar, battery and EV charger installs.Install solar now or lock a battery before winter evening loads.
AprilStable weather, lower heat risk, good working days.Excellent. Often the best balance of weather and scheduling.Book solar plus battery, inverter upgrades and switchboard work.
MayCooler mornings, still manageable roof work.Very good, especially for battery retrofits and repairs.Get winter ready with battery backup, monitoring and panel cleaning.
JuneShorter days, wetter roofs and lower production.Okay, but allow weather delays.Book battery retrofits, inverter replacements and quote work for spring solar.
JulyCold mornings, shorter work windows.Fine for batteries and switchboards, slower for roof heavy jobs.Repair faults before spring output rises. Start spring quote planning.
AugustWeather starts opening up, spring demand begins.Good if you book early.Quote now for September or October install before summer rush.
SeptemberBetter sun, more roof days, rising enquiry volume.Excellent but busier.Install solar for the coming cooling season. Confirm battery eligibility.
OctoberStrong production season begins, installers are busy.Very good for output, but lead times stretch.Book fast if you want commissioning before December.
NovemberHotter roof days and heavy pre-summer demand.Good but rushed if you start late.Only proceed if equipment and Powercor approval are clear.
DecemberHeat, storms, holidays and compressed schedules.Possible, but not the calmest month.Book urgent repairs, not complicated redesigns, unless dates are already secured.

This planner is about probability, not a hard rule. A clear single storey Colorbond roof can be installed in winter without drama. A steep tile roof can be postponed in any month if the roof is wet, windy or unsafe.

Why autumn is usually the sweet spot

Autumn gives a Bendigo homeowner useful information and manageable site conditions. By March, the summer bill has shown how much air conditioning, pool pumping, hot water and daytime usage matter. The roof is not as punishing as January. Installers can work more safely and the system is ready for both winter evening bills and next summer.

A solar only system installed in April will not show its biggest production until spring, but it starts reducing bills immediately. A battery installed in autumn can be tuned before winter, when evening loads rise and solar days shorten. If blackout backup is part of the reason, autumn gives time to choose selected circuits properly rather than panic buying after a storm outage.

Autumn also helps with quote quality. Good installers have time to check roof layout, switchboard, Powercor connection, panel placement and rebate paperwork. Rushed pre-Christmas work is where vague assumptions become variations. If you are comparing 2 or 3 quotes, use the solar installer checklist and the battery quote comparison guide before approving anything.

Lead times: what actually has to happen before install day

A standard solar installation is often one day on the roof, but the calendar is longer than one day. A useful timeline is 2-5 business days for quote and design once the power bill and roof details are available, several days to a few weeks for Powercor pre-approval depending on the connection, then equipment allocation and scheduling. A straightforward job can move from enquiry to install in 2-4 weeks. A battery, switchboard upgrade, heritage check or three phase issue can push that to 4-8 weeks.

Solar repairs can be faster. A monitoring fault or inverter diagnosis might be booked inside a week, with parts determining the second visit. An inverter replacement is commonly $1,800-$3,800 and often quicker than a full new system. If the question is whether to repair or replace, start with solar repairs rather than a new install quote.

Powercor timing matters because rooftop solar and many battery changes need the right connection settings. The approval can include export limits, and the inverter must be commissioned to match. If your goal is a larger system, battery and EV charging, read the grid connection guide early. It can change the design before the contract is signed.

Lead time also depends on access. A single storey Colorbond roof in Epsom is simpler than a double storey tile roof in central Bendigo. Long cable runs to sheds in Marong or Junortoun need more planning. If trenching or switchboard work is likely, do not leave the job until the month you want savings to appear.

Do prices move with the season?

Weather does not usually move hardware prices much. Panel, inverter and battery prices are driven more by supply, exchange rates, product cycles, rebates and STC values than by Bendigo's forecast. What season changes is installer availability. In busy months, you may have less choice of install date and less room for discounting. In quieter months, a good installer may be able to inspect and schedule faster.

Battery pricing has one extra issue: rebate timing. The federal battery discount is based on STC settings that reduce over time and changed in May 2026. The quote should state whether the discount is tied to quote date, install date or final commissioning date. If a quote assumes a discount that drops before installation, the final price can change.

Solar STCs also reduce over the life of the national scheme. The annual change is not usually a reason to panic buy, but it is a reason to avoid sitting on a signed quote for months without checking whether the numbers are still current. Ask whether the quote is fixed, how long it is valid, and what happens if hardware or STC values change before install.

One honest constraint: if the roof needs repairs, do the roof first. Solar should not be installed on brittle tile, leaking iron or a roof that will be replaced within 2 years. Removing and reinstalling panels later can cost $1,500-$4,000, which wipes out any benefit from rushing the solar job this season.

Timing by job type

Solar only: March to May is best, August to October is also strong if you book before the rush. Avoid late November starts if you need the system guaranteed before Christmas.

Battery retrofit: any month can work. Autumn is best for using summer data, winter is fine because much of the work is wall and switchboard based, and spring is useful if you want summer self consumption ready.

Solar plus battery: allow more planning time. You are choosing panels, inverter, battery location, backup circuits, switchboard scope and rebate treatment in one decision. Use the battery sizing guide and rebate eligibility guide before comparing prices.

EV charger with solar: plan it with the solar if the car is coming within 12 months. It may save on cable routing, switchboard work and solar smart charging setup. If you already have solar, read the EV charger cost guide before deciding whether a basic or solar aware charger fits your routine.

Timing questions

What is the best month for solar installation in Bendigo?
March to May is usually the best window for Bendigo solar installation. Roof temperatures are easier, summer storm delays have eased and the system is ready before winter bills and the next summer cooling season. A standard solar job still needs 1-4 weeks for quote, approval, equipment and scheduling.
Is winter a bad time to install solar?
Winter is not bad for installation, but it has shorter work days, more wet roof delays and lower immediate production. June to August can be a smart time if you want a cleaner schedule and less summer rush pressure. A 6.6 kW system installed in July will still be ready for high production from September onward.
When should I install a battery?
A battery can be installed any month, but autumn is often best because you have summer usage data and time to prepare for winter evening loads. If outage backup matters, install before storm season rather than after the first blackout. A retrofit battery usually needs 2-5 weeks from quote to commissioning.
Do solar prices change by season?
The panel and battery hardware price does not usually swing much month to month, but busy periods can affect discounts, availability and install dates. Rebate settings and STC factors matter more than weather. In 2026, battery discount factors change over time, so confirm the installed date assumption in any battery quote.
How far ahead should I book before summer?
If you want solar running before December heat, start quoting by August or September. That allows 2-4 weeks for quote and design, Powercor pre-approval, equipment allocation and install scheduling. Leaving it until late November can push commissioning into the busiest part of the year.
Can rain or heat delay the job?
Yes. Wet tile roofs, lightning, strong wind and extreme heat can delay roof work for safety. A one day solar job can slip 2-7 days in a bad weather week. Good installers reschedule rather than rush roof work in unsafe conditions.
