What you can safely check before paying for a visit
You can check the app, your internet connection, the inverter display, the date and time on the inverter, and whether the AC solar breaker is in the on position. You can trim shading vegetation from ground level if it is your tree and it is safe. You can compare daily production against the same month last year if your monitoring history is available.
Do not open the inverter, touch rooftop isolators, unplug DC connectors or climb onto a wet or fragile roof. Solar DC can remain live in daylight even when the AC breaker is off. If there is a burning smell, visible melting, repeated tripping, water in an isolator or an earth fault message, leave the solar off and book a technician. How we decide between repair, replacement and leaving it alone
The first question is always age. A three year old inverter with a clear warranty fault should not be replaced at the homeowner’s cost without checking the warranty path. The repair price may be only the call-out, photos, testing and a manufacturer claim. A 12 year old inverter with repeated internal faults is different. Spending $700 to keep it alive for another few months is rarely good value when a new unit brings current grid settings, better monitoring and a fresh warranty.
The second question is whether the fault is costing you money every day. A dead 6.6 kW system in October or January can lose useful generation quickly, especially if someone is home during the day or the house runs air-con. A monitoring-only issue in June might not justify an urgent paid visit if the inverter screen shows normal output. Bendigo has strong summer production, but winter generation is lower, so the urgency of a non-safety fault should match the season and the size of the loss.
The third question is roof and access risk.
